The Memphis Goodwill store on South Highland Street offers plenty of bargains, but what some people may not know is that it also is a great place to recycle.

Located on 574 S. Highland St., the Memphis Goodwill location has served the University district for well more than a decade.
“We keep tons of items out of landfill by recycling items like clothes, books and dishes,” said Senior Marketing Director for Goodwill Trina Jones. “We also take computer equipment. We have program with Dell called Dell Reconnect, and we send several tons of computer equipment off every year, whether it works or not.”

The community is encouraged to recycle more than just clothing. Working and non-working computer parts are encouraged.

The South Highland store is a one of its kind in Memphis. Goodwill has nine stores in the Memphis area along with 25 drop off centers.

“The half price store here on Highland is the only half price store we have in Memphis,” Jones said. “If you look at anything in the store, and the price says $2, when you get to the register you will only pay a $1. This is the place to come if you want a real bargain.”

Asides clothing and other items, the Memphis Goodwill stores continue to contribute to the community with job placement opportunities.

“We employ 770 people per year,” said Jones. “One of the newest things we are doing is trying to expand the number of people we place through contracts. We train and hire people at places like the IRS Center, the Hilton Corporation and government buildings throughout Memphis and Jackson. That’s one area were really trying to build so we can offer more job opportunities to people.”

Customers are wowed by the bargains.

“Where can you find pants (Osh Kosh) like these for this price?” asked customer Mike Clark, who was shopping at the South Highland Goodwill store on April 13.

Jones said Goodwill is an important resource for the people of West Tennessee.

South Highland store hours are Monday-Saturday 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
