A feature of the University District that many people overlook is the television station located on 485 S. Highland St., just down the street from the University of Memphis campus.

The station is the local Fox affiliate and can be seen on channel 13 locally.

Fox13 has been on the air in Memphis and in the University District since 1953.

Owned and operated by Fox Television Studios, WHBQ –TV, was once a CBS affiliate, then moved on to ABC, and has been a part of Fox since 1995.
At Fox, they offer internship opportunities to journalism students, which have benefited many journalism students at the U of M such as Joshua Bolden, a senior journalism student at the U of M.

With a concentration in broadcast journalism, he interned at the station for four months from January to April of 2013.

“It was very convenient for me to drive just a short way to get to my internship,” Bolden said.

Fox is the only media outlet inside the University District for journalism students in the area.

With the close proximity of the U of M to the station, Fox tries to feature a story about the University District daily.

“Fox 13 was serious and fun, but they balance both,” Bolden added.

Bolden said that he would recommend this internship to any journalism student that is looking for experience.

Being located in the heart of the U-District helps give Fox a better chance to cover stories going on at the U of M and surrounding area.

Another benefit of being close to the U of M is that Fox has hired many local journalism students, both current and in the past.

The station has been an important part of the U-District’s history for decades, and continues to be the center for journalism in the area.
