A look inside the newest Cafe Eclectic on Highland

Memphis based business, Café Eclectic, will bring its fresh baked pastries and one of a kind espresso drinks to the University District by mid-May. The newest café will open underneath the Stratum at the corner of Highland and Mynders, 510 S. Highland St.

It’s a family business owned by the Bouldens. Rachel Boulden says the first café opened in 2008, but she has been in the coffee business for almost 10 years. When her mother got the idea of opening the first location in Midtown she didn’t expect it would ever get this big.
“We thought it would be a little coffee shop, somewhere people could walk to and get coffee and sandwiches, but it’s turned into something much bigger,” says Boulden.

The midtown location at 603 N McLean Blvd. has now been around for five years. The Harbortown location at 111 Harbor Town Square, which is a bit smaller and has an abbreviated menu, has been open for three years.

Boulden says, “The Highland location will be a lot like Harbortown, except we are expecting more of a student crowd.

The University District café will be similar to Harbortown in that it will offer more sandwiches, soups, wraps and of course their robust coffee. Boulden says the café uses an Italian brand of coffee called “illy”.

“They came and trained our baristos on how to make a real Italian espresso and explained to us where all the coffee is grown and bought. It was really cool,” Boulden also says she loves them, because they were recently ranked in the top ten most ethical companies.

Boulden hopes the new location will have a similar atmosphere as the other locations just with more students. Also, they don’t have a grand opening scheduled.

“We have a soft opening. One day the light will be on and hopefully people will notice, “ Rachel says.

Memphis Student, Beth Cooper, says she is a huge fan of the local coffee shop.

“I love their Espresso Campana and fresh baked pastries. I would definitely frequent the new location if I weren’t moving to California.”

The Bouldens have been working on the Highland location for more than two years and are really excited to see it open in less than a month. The new location will be open seven days a week like the other ones, but it will look into extended hours when the Fall 2013 semester begins.
