When you think of a barbershop, you think of a place where you can get a good haircut and socialize amongst people.

Professional Cuts is all that and then some.  Located at 3844 Park Ave.in the University District, the barbershop has a family friendly feel to it, and most of the customers have been getting their haircut there since it first opened ten years ago.

Larry Lockridge, owner of Larry’s Cakes and Plates, has been getting his haircut at Professional Cuts for eight years and loves the family environment that the shop brings.

“The name speaks for itself, ‘Professional Cuts’ and everybody is real professional,” Lockridge says.  “This where everybody come to chill out, mellow out and there should more places like this around Memphis.”

Upon entering the barbershop, master barber and owner, Broderic Hinton, greets his guest with open arms and invites them in as if they were family.

“When I was growing up, I remember the shops I used to go to had a real friendly environment so I wanted to bring the same atmosphere to mine,” Hinton says.

Chances are there will be about four or five people just hanging out on his couches and sitting in chairs just talking and telling jokes.

While some might be there to actually get a haircut, others are there to enjoy the conversation and the family friendly environment that the barbershop gives off.  It never gets too quiet in a barbershop when there are stories being told, gossip being spread and news being reported.  Customers also have two televisions to watch while they sit and wait on a chair to become available.  The television is normally kept on sports or either a movie that would seem interesting to everyone in the shop.

The place has about five chairs that the barbers use with decorations of local businesses on the wall to show support for the local businesses in the area.
